We relocated to Del Mar almost seven years ago with our two Labradors, then ages 8 and 6. After researching vets, we chose Del Mar Heights Veterinary Hospital—and we couldn’t be happier with that decision. The entire team is fantastic—friendly, compassionate, and highly skilled. They never push unnecessary procedures or treatments, which we truly appreciate.
In 2020, our 10-year-old chocolate lab was blind and had a tumor that wouldn’t stop bleeding. We knew it was time. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, we had to drop her off. About 30 minutes later, the vet called and confirmed what we already knew—it was time to say goodbye. When I asked if we could be with her, they immediately made accommodations. They opened the back door for us, allowing us to spend precious moments with our sweet girl and stay with her as she crossed the rainbow bridge. Their kindness and understanding meant the world to us.
Last week, we faced another heartbreaking goodbye—our 14-year-old lab could no longer get up. When I called, they told us to come in immediately, no matter which doctor was available. Dr. Doumani, who was newer to the practice and didn’t know us, was incredibly kind, patient, and professional. She explained our options and assured us she would support whatever decision we made. While she could provide pain medication, our girl’s condition wouldn’t improve. We knew what was best for her and let her go peacefully.
The entire staff is amazing. Monica from the front desk wasn’t there when we arrived, but when she heard we were, she made a point to come in and give me a hug. She even went to the back to be with Kona while they placed her port, so she would have a familiar presence with her. Daniel, the tech—who also knew Kona—was equally kind and compassionate. He gently carried her back into the room, giving us a much-needed laugh. Kona had ripped out the initial port, and we all smiled, knowing she was going out with her signature moxie.
Losing a beloved pet is never easy, but the care, respect, and empathy from everyone at Del Mar Heights Veterinary Hospital have made these difficult moments a little more bearable. We are forever grateful for their dedication and kindness.

The Del Mar Heights Veterinary Hospital has been incredible in helping our jet setter Portuguese Water Dog, Zico, with all of his travel documents, exams and overall support. Zico’s our fur baby, our only child, and we only trust him with the best. We had to look no further than the WHOLE team at Del Mar Veterinary. Thank you all for making our trip possible!🇵🇹🇧🇷🐾
UPDATE 🔔 from Rio de Janeiro, Brasil: Zico’s been enjoying the beaches, the water and the nature here. Lots of long walks and playing. Thank you everyone e obrigada 🙏🏻

Convenient, friendly, professional. Not the least expensive vet around, but I think $129 for a checkup and two feline vaccines is reasonable. I take both of my male cats there. Been going there for more than seven years. Update: Prices have increased quite a bit. About $247 for similar visit and two medicines. Very happy with Dr. Doumani and her assistant.

Dr Baer is wonderful, attentive and he took positive action with my cocker spaniel, Honey, on my very first visit. Dr. Baer is highly rated on Reviews. My cocker has been everywhere with me since she was eight weeks old and 2 1/2 pounds. She is now over 9 years old. She is my side-kick. Dr. Baer checked her out in her room and took notes to come to conclusions for her care. She had had a bad couple of days with diarrhea and she still had an ear infection.
My past Vet at Helen Woodward kept packing her ears and I kept requesting antibiotics by mouth as I know that had worked for her before and they had her past records to prove my request. . . She refused to do so on my third visit for the same thing over $1200 later. So I left that vet.
Dr Baer took both of her current problems with recent diarrhea seriously and checked her ears immediately giviningnhwr a full well check. A couple of weeks later, she is definitely on her way to improving and she is hearing so much better. After trying some drops and some antibiotic medication for her ears, She is coming back to her regular energetic self again within two weeks I’ve seen Dr. Bayer.
She was also exposed to toxic mold in a home that I rented for at $4200/a month with all wood floors. I noticed some warping on the floors and asked if there had been any water damage and the Agent representing the seller said, “ NO”! After I moved in, I started coughing incessantly within three months, and could not figure out what was going on. Well, now, three years later, come to find out, it is toxic Mold. It is was in my sinuses and chest and I am infected with this toxic disease called pseudomonas. I found out about nine months later that the home had been flooded from top to bottom with all wood floors. I also noticed there were silverfish everywhere, which was disgusting. I found out later from the neighbor that the home had been flooded from top to bottom with all wood floors and was never told about this prior to moving in. I therefore, asked Dr. Baer to check my dog for toxic mold. So far so good so my prayers are that she is clear Toxic mold, infection. It has gone into my chest. And it Is truly a horrible experience, but I wanted to check her out because it was under the wood floors and she is closer Wood floors. I was never told about the flooding in the house, and I moved as soon as I found out.. I have been so sick for three years and I just really wanted to find out if it was affecting my dog. He is very thorough and patient and explained his program for her care. Thank you, Dr Baer.

I've been bringing my pets to DMHV for over 3 years, but I can no longer recommend their veterinary care. Unfortunately, the quality of care has declined since Dr. Cargen left. Specifically, I advise against the services of Dr. Baer and Dr. Doumani. While the support staff, particularly Monica, are great, I found Dr. Doumani to be inexperienced and unhelpful, lacking the confidence and expertise necessary for caring for older pets. Moreover, I paid $600 in fees, only to have Dr. Doumani's assessment of my pet, including her interpretation of blood results, turn out to be incorrect. Dr. Baer also came across as apathetic and disengaged. It is almost irresponsible to allow these vets to care for pets and give owners the impression that they have their pets' best interests in mind. I strongly recommend evaluating the competence of the vets at DMHV.
